I sat on the board walk of my friends house and chatted to this kid Joel. He’d been tuning boards. Getting the wave down. Pulling in. Pulling out. That was the week before the Billabong Pro in J-Bay way back in 1999. He was a wild card entry. A week later he kicked out of the back of a perfect J-Bay right hander and punched the air… While he was in the air… When he came back up on to that porch the next day he was back to being a big eyed kid. Just now with his pockets stuffed with cash and a world of opportunity in front of him. Since then super tubes has been a special place for Joel. Friends, good times and 1st places. Joel NOT at J-Bay? I don’t know who’s the sadder?
