Air Raid! US Open Of Surfing Gives You Wings…
The smaller conditions and light winds have all played to the air routines of the young and progressive. Don’t get me wrong the carve is still pulling the points. But the last sixteen is going to be a tweak fest as the judges navigate their way through the finer points of what constitutes a more difficult grab or rotation with airs playing a big part in the trophy race. In a way it’s going to lay down the bench mark for where we go with this stuff as there will most likely be every variation available to compare by the end of the day. So is there something new to be seen, some new variation that will poke it’s way to the forefront. Well if we haven’t seen it by heat 8 then the match up of Julian Wilson and Brett Simpson should certainly provide it. It all kicks off with the young pretenders in heat 1 with Filipe ‘holy’ Toledo then straight on with Pupo who has been stomping reverses of the highest order. Kelly is in 3 up against Jesse Mendes. The match up in 7 is a belter as the two Hawaiians Keanu Asing and John John Florence duke it out. We all want the match ups to push through to the quarters… If they do we may well see new markers set for air style… WCT surfing this year has reached new heights. Long may it continue!
